Ride safe

A 125 cc scooter is a real motorbike. Take a minute to read this before your first ride.

Before you start the engine

  • Helmet on, chinstrap clipped. Provided with every Skootor — AS 1698 or UNECE 22 approved.
  • Phone in your pocket or jacket, not under the seat (your seat will be locked during the ride).
  • Close the seat firmly before riding.
  • Sit with both feet flat on the ground.
  • Run your eye over the lights, indicators, and brake lever feel. Anything off, report it via the in-app help before you ride.
  • Fold the kickstand in by gently rolling the bike forward.
  • Press the starter button on the right handlebar to start the engine.

Braking — the most important skill

The right-hand brake lever controls your front wheel. The left lever controls the rear. On a step-through 125 you also have a foot brake on some models — check before you set off.

  • Squeeze both levers smoothly at the same time, using two fingers each.
  • The front brake gives you ~75% of your stopping power — but grabbing it suddenly will lock the wheel. Roll it on progressively.
  • Don't use only the rear brake — you'll skid before you stop.
  • Once you're stopped, plant your left foot firmly on the ground.

Road rules — non-negotiable

  • Wear your helmet at all times. A motorcycle is illegal to ride without one in NSW.
  • No drugs or alcohol. NSW law sets zero BAC for Learner (L), P1, and P2 motorcycle riders. Skootor extends this requirement to every rider regardless of licence class — zero BAC, full stop.
  • No passengers. Skootors are rider-only.
  • No motorways or highways above 80 km/h. Our fleet is built for city riding — 125 cc scooters get blown around by truck wake on the M1/M2.
  • Obey all NSW road rules. Speed limits, give-way, indicators, the lot.
  • Stay focused — no headphones, no phone while moving.
  • Stay out of other vehicles' blind spots, especially trucks and buses.
  • Give way to pedestrians.

Stopping & parking

  • Bring the bike to a complete stop with both brakes.
  • Press the stop button on the right handlebar to kill the engine.
  • Fold the kickstand down with your foot until you feel it click.
  • In the app, hit End ride — that arms the alarm and engine immobiliser.
  • Open the seat with the seat-release lever or the bike's key, stash the helmet, close the seat.

Where to park: on the street in a marked parking bay, inside a designated Skootor return zone (you'll see them on the map). Never in:

  • Bike lanes
  • Bus lanes or bus stops
  • Footpaths or pedestrian crossings
  • Driveways or private property
  • Disabled-only spaces unless you have a valid permit

Parking outside a return zone or in a prohibited spot may incur a return-zone fee — see the Rental Agreement for the schedule.

What to do if something goes wrong

  • Crash: if you can, move out of traffic. Triple-zero for emergencies. Then in the app, open Help → Report incident.
  • Theft or tampering: contact us immediately via the in-app help. Don't try to chase the bike.
  • Mechanical issue: if it's not safe to ride, pull over and end the ride. We'll dispatch a recovery if needed.
  • Need a hand any other time: 24/7 AI assistant via the in-app help chat, with a human escalation.
